In this commercial, a family is shown sitting around the kitchen table at breakfast. The father pours himself a glass of orange juice and is bombarded by news of unfortunate events that will happen throughout his day. Some of these events include getting his paper late, getting his hard drive wiped out, getting a flat tire, and receiving the silent treatment from his daughter. You might find his reaction to all of this bad news surprising.

How does the dad react to all of his bad news? How does the irony of his reaction promote Florida Orange Juice? How does the commercial use pathos and setting to sell the orange juice to viewers? Overall do you find the commercial successful in its attempt to promote the sale of orange juice?

This video uses a rhetorical fallacy to promote the pathos appeal to sell the orange juice. When the dad responds with "awesome" and "great" to the negative things that are supposedly happening through out the day, sentimental appeal is used to distract the audience from the negative appeal of the events. The irony promotes the orange juice because the dad seems to think that regardless of what happens through out his day, he will still be in a good mood because of the orange juice. I think this helps the company sell their product because these are common things that happen in everyday life and who wouldn't want to maintain their happy mood?
The commercial is interesting because it is relatable. Everyday we wake up with things to do and anticipate the problems that will arise and hope that they don't. Most of the time however we don't think the unfortunate with happen. This commercial uses that to its advantage. The producers equate that their orange juice will make everything better. It is an effective way appealing to the audiences emotions. An great use of pathos. I thought it was funny that the daughter responded to the fathers question by a text message. It added humor to the snowball of unfortunate events to come for the father.
This commercial will be successful in aiding the sale of Florida Orange Juice because it is telling potential customers that drinking their OJ at breakfast time will make any day a great one, despite potential mishaps. Like Ashley Cahall said, every day we wake up with problems to expect but this commercial shows that Florida OJ makes them go away!!!! It's a great use of pathos, appealing to our humor, a great use of ethos, setting up credibility because a seemingly successful business man is drinking the juice, and a great use of logos because who doesn't want to be in a great mood during the shitty moments of the day? It's completely logical.
This is definitely going to be an effective commercial using the logos that Florida orange juice makes everything better. I find it interesting that he even asks the paper boy to make his day even more of a pain since he requests to have his paper delivered at the same time the sprinkler goes off. They must be really trying to make their orange juice look really good if they parody someone asking for more of an inconvenience versus more convenient.
After viewing this commercial many people will purchase Florida Orange Juice. The commercial is very ironic because everyone is telling the father all the bad events that will happen to him during the day, but he just rubs it off because his orange juice automatically makes his day a good day and prepares him for anything. Anyone who sees this will relate it to their life because everyone goes through rough patches during their day and would love to feel prepared to take it on. It is also funny how the dad wants to make his day worse when talking with the paper boy and how his daughter texts him instead of using verbal communication since she is giving him the silent treatment. This commercial is very satirical and is a great way to sell a product.
I found it interesting that even before the dad had his helping of Florida Orange Juice, he began accepting the bad news rather optimistically compared to how the average person would react. This causes me to assume that the actual consumption of the orange juice is not needed but also the anticipation of consumption is enough to be in a good mood. This could further advertise the product by showing that the consumer will be in a good mood before, during, and after consumption instead of the the assumed during and after.
The producers of this commercial really play on the pathos appeal to the audience. The bad things that are going to occur in his day occur every day for people without warning. They also use ironic humor in his reactions to each problem which is always a useful tool in gaining the audience's attention. They also use an epigram at the end of the commerical saying "Take on the day" which is a tool used to suggest that Florida Orange Juice will help you face the day's unexpected problems.
I belive the dad reacts very well to all of the bad news, in fact he even initiates it. They sit down and he says lets get started. This beginning tied with the ending of "awsome, good thing I have my orange juice" is a dramatic message to trigger our pathos to associate with dad. These are the big selling statements for the commercial. Dad basically says bring it on...I have my orange juice. The commercial does use a pathos very well to sell its product. In starting with a long list of things that could ruin anyones day you should feel bad for dad. Dad counters these problems with a hakuna matata attitude potrayed to the viewer as a direct result of their product first thing in the morning. I think the commercial has a sucessful marketing message for many people and will sell product based on this commercial.
The makers of this commercial seem to be implying that no matter what happens throughout the day, drinking florida orange juice will make everything okay. The dad is shown reacting to the bad news with a happy attitude because he knows he can handle anything if he has his morning cup of florida orange juice. We can all relate to this commercial because everyone experiences the little annoyances that the dad faces through the day. By relating to the annoyances, we may feel that the orange juice would help us as well, tackle our daily issues. This commercial appeals to our everyday experiences and may lead us to buy this brand of orange juice.
Overall this commercial effectively uses various satirical elements to promote its brand. Furthermore, I found it interesting how the commercial not only utilized the listing of a series of bad events about to occur to the main character to invoke pathos but also the overall setting. The commercial takes place in a very brightly lit, clean, contemporary kitchen playing off that the pleasant atmosphere will counteract the negative events being said and overall add to the positive image of the orange juice. Additionally, the setting looks like the kitchen of the typical suburban American family hoping for it to appeal to their target audience. All in all, through all of these various devices the commercial accomplishes its goal of creating a positive image of the orange juice brand and creating an appeal for it.
This commercial is showing satire because it shows the typical American family isn't always perfect, and that just a simple juice will get you through the day. It is using pathos to sympathize with the father when he is having a rough day and his daughter is "ignoring him". Florida Orange Juice is trying to gain consumers by correlating the juice with having a good day, so maybe people will drink it more often.
In this Florida Orange Juice commercial, the producers successfully use the setting to demonstrate how life is like a work place. The commercial takes place inside the main characters home, as he and his family sit around the breakfast table. This setting is similar to a conference room discussion at work. The dad begins the conversation by saying “Lets get started.” The family members act as the employees, explaining scenarios of the day to their boss, the dad. The mother reminds me of a secretary as she holds a pen in her hand and reads from a piece of paper: “On your way to the client presentation your going to blow a tire and have to walk across town to get there.” The dad takes this very well as he says “Great!” I find it especially funny that there is a token Asian guy at the table who talks about how at 10:45, he will let the dad know that “a computer virus totally wiped out [his] hard drive.” This commercial successfully represents how life at home is similar to life in the work place. And of course, how Florida Orange Juice makes all the challenges and difficulties of life tolerable.
The use of color in this ad is very effective. All of the people sitting around the table are wearing either light or neutral colors and the background is blurred. As the commercial moves from person to person talking to the dad, the bright orange juice still catches your eye. This is effective in making the orange juice stand out. Also, dull colors envoke feelings of gloom and the color orange makes people think of happiness. This enhances the idea that the orange juice brightens the dads day when he drinks it.
I think it's interesting that the commercial takes place in a light setting with everyone wearing light colored clothing, and when the family goes around the table saying the unfortunate events that will be happening to the father that day, they're all speaking in a happy tone of voice instead of a depressed or angered tone. The commercial used pathos to cause the viewers to feel sorry for the father but then seeing him drinking orange juice and still be in a good mood should cause the viewers to want to drink the orange juice. However, I feel like this portrayal of the bad scheme of events didn't really do anything for me because the way the unfortunate events are told to the father are said too lightly so I feel no empathy for the father. But, I did notice the rhetorical fallacy used to promote the orange juice with the father saying "great" and/or "awesome" to each negative thing.
In this commercial the producers presents the dad as a regular person which is received at the morning many different of bad news are suppose to make him fell angry and in bad temper but the expression on his face was normal even when his paper late, getting his hard drive wiped out, getting a flat tire, and receiving the silent treatment from his daughter ,he still have the smile on his face , because of the Florida Orange Juice ,as he said he still have a good thing to do which is drinking orange juice ,as we can see the family expression was with no feelings just straight faces ,but in the end producers made it clear to the audience that it was ironic when he said he has orange juice to drink and forgot about all bad news .The commercial was successful because it shows how much the Florida orange juice makes you forget and relief all you might facing in your day.
I think this video is also satirical of the view this generation family, because the girl won't talk to the father and is on her phone the entire time.
